Just survived the hottest part of the year riding. Started back after 15 years and picked one of the hottest Summers I can remember to start back.
Nolan helmet is vented, Fieldsheer Hot weather jacket keeps the wind flowing and avoiding the stop and go of town is a very good excuse to ride longer on the back roads. I know, why the jacket? I say why not. I would rather have it and not need it than need it and not have it... But the most effective cooling gear I have is surprising. A 3" by 15" piece of cloth wet but not dripping wrapped around my neck. Without this on 100 degree days I would be miserable when stopped and even a little uncomfortable while moving. With it the temps feel like the 80's. During the 20 minute ride to work I don't do the running man sweat-fest, even in the early afternoon. Did this on the days the heat index was in the 115 - 120 range and was amazed. http:\\www.shammysolutions.com You can make 6 or more neck wraps from the large cloth. For ten bucks you get two large and two sports sized cloths. This is the best deal I could find on these and am in no way affiliated with this company. Just a recommending a great use for a good product. |

The link didn't go anywhere.
I'll have to try your solution -- I just sat at traffic lights and poured a bottle of water down the neck of my jacket. I was headed home so I didn't care about the wet T shirt look. Jacket's getting a little "ripe" though. jackie

Can't get that image outta my head now... *GRIN*
Sorry for the bad link... Try this: http://www.shammysolutions.com The science is the same, evaporation cools the surface above the arteries and bring blood temp down. The cloth is super absorbant and dries out very slowly so the effect is very long lasting. A personal swamp cooler of sorts. ![]() Cloth size is 3" x >20" wrapped from front to back around the front of the neck and under your shirt in the back. Strange collar look, but who cares when the temps are so high. ![]() Last edited by Jharpe; 09-11-2007 at 01:45 PM. |

Hey, I've got some of this stuff!
Great for drying water off bike (and dog) as well. I never thought of using it to keep you cool. Great idea and thank you! jackie

Thanks for the info. After a long, hot summer of much riding, I will be washing my main riding outfit tomorrow. I was ordered to do so.

There are enterprizing individuals and companies that sell neck wraps for a premium. I have seen them for 15 bucks a piece.
Being a biker on a budget, I had to find a better way. The Shammy neck wrap and a spray or two of Fabreeze has kept me cooler and non-stinky all Summer. Next I will be gearing up for the little bit of chill we get here in SE GA.
