Oh I have that paint lifting leak under the brake box on the handle.:(
1) Is there a kit to fix this or do you have to change the whole brake master cylinder.
2) Can I do this myself or does it require a special tool in order to bleed the ABS brakes.
Rally is coming up and I'd like to fix before going. idea, comments welcome thks

A master cylinder rebuild kit is available from your local BMW Dealer. Not too hard to replace, no special tools needed. Regular brake bleeding procedures should work with a '97 model. YMMV.

Jim thanks for the advise, ? you've done this before ?
I've seen the articles on the internet and agree it looks simple enough.
I'm willing to try it but its nice to have a back up, you willing to be that back up, I live in alpharetta.??
I want to be ready before the rally and have an appt with BMW on the 4/28th, let me know ok.

Juan,
Call Atl. BMW and see if they have the rebuild, or what. I have been under the weather, but if I get back on my hind legs, I will offer some extra hands to work on your bike. I had to replace the entire master cylinder on my GS. It was a pain but doable.

Thanks so much for the offer, Please get on your hind legs for a better motive than mine. I have an appt with Atl BMW on 4/28 and the kit has been ordered.
hope its just the kit :) and not mst cyl.
Again thanks for your kind offer.

Its probably best to have the pros do it. Gives you someone to sue if your brakes fail! I have had Atl BMW help get my brakes up to snuff, I had a rear that would not bleed all the air out. I bet I ran through 3 bottles of fluid before I gave up. They fixed it.

Sounds like you will have the problem taken care of by the time you get this. FWIW, I rebuilt the front master cylinder on my 97 RT last year due to the problem you describe. I followed advice and instructions written by the helpful folks at IBMWR (look here http://www.largiader.com/tech/r11mc/).

I spent a lot of time cleaning / smoothing (very carefully, using polishing compound instead of sandpaper) the cylinder. My cylinder was very "gunky" and somewhat corroded near the top end, but cleaned up well. I have had zero problems since then (Until I rode a new GS last week. It brakes VERY well. Need more money).

I hope you have good results whatever method you use.
