Finally I have ventured out and did the 50CC:
March 18th 3AM left Jacksonville Fla. Witness form & gas receipt in hand.
Traveled I10 thru Houston Tx.50 miles out of Houston mother nature began her fury: tonados with wind and hail.
Decided to spend night in Kerryville Tx 128 miles short of planned stop Junction Tx.Waited storm out till 4AM. Headed back on track to San Diego after 4 hours sleep.
Rode from Kerryville thru 50 mph winds and mid-forty temps thru desert.
Arrived at Tucson Az 7:30 pm. Stopped for fuel; 353 miles to San Diego.
Good riding no wind and clear night until 47 miles from San Diego.
As I began the ride thru the mountain pass first rain at 2000 feet, then ice at 3800 feet, temps at 38, finally blowing snow at 4500 feet.Took (2) hours to get thru pass.
Made San Diego at midnight PCT. 3AM Eastern time: Yes, 48 hours coast to coast.
What a great adventure!!
Rode a 03 BMW K1200LT/
Now looking at the IronButt 100cc!!
Not bad for an old 56 year man.

Way to go Randy! Congratulations on the 50CC!

The 50CC is one of the best Iron Butt rides. Too bad you missed the beautiful scenery as you climbed out of the central valley of California and into the foothills and mountains east of San Diego. Maybe on your next 50CC you can plan this section in daylight!

Thunderstorms, tornados, snow, ice . . . geez! Other than doing something to aggravate the weather gods on your ride was there anything else noteworthy? And just what did you do to make the weather gods so angry?

If you get time, I'd love to hear more about your ride.

Way to go Randy and congratulations. That takes a lot of determination, guts & fortitude to brave all 4 seasons in 2 days. It really separates the men from the boyz. Please tell me Kathy was not on the back.

Congratulations on your accomplishment Randy. Sounds like a true adventure. It is amazing how the weather can differ on such a ride. I still hope that one day I will get psyced up enough to prepare for and document an IB ride myself. I've done a couple of SS 1000's, I just didn't document them. Completing the 50 CC has got to make you feel proud.

Hmmm...JAX to San Diego:
1) 2310sm @ avg speed 46.2 mph is 50 hours.
2) 2310sm @ 38mpg is ~61 gals fuel burn.
3) 61 gals burn @ 5 gals/tank is ~13 fuel stops.

Maybe trade the topcase for one of those GS Aux fuel tanks say 3 gals then:
3A) 61 gals burn at 8 gals/tank is ~ 8 fuel stops.

4) 8 fuel stops at 15 minutes per stop is two hours Stopped + 4 hours Rest is 6 hours Stopped leaving 44 hours for 50CC.

5) 2310sm / 44hours is 52.5 mph minimum moving average speed to complete mission.

This is Beach to Beach routing - Jacksonville Beach to Ocean Beach San Diego.

Hmmmm.

Or... do the ride on my G/SPD with a 9.5 gallon tank and possibly cut it to 6 gas stops. :D

Congratulations Randy!

Hey Ian,

Is this an offer to loan me your G/SPD for a 50cc Ride?

I guess with the cost of gas at about $3.00US on the east coast, and I don't know how many pesos on the west coast I should be soliciting sponsorships for the 50cc ride.

Lets see rough estimate of expenses:
1) 130 gals @ $4.00US is $520.00
2) 4 Hotels at $75.00 is $300.00
3) Food for 4 days is $80.00
4) IBA 50cc Certification is $45.00.

This totals out at $945.00 to start. Yikes. And then there is bike prep....Oy Vey.

Scrat says this is a lot of Nuts.

TTFN,
