Dang Wess,
If the 5 corners tour wasn't intrigueing enough before, you have certainly upped the ante.

Wes,

During the "infamous" dual-captain'ed 5 corners ride conducted in February, Bill G. and I made note of something...and I thought you might like to "up the ante" for future 5 corners riders.

During our ride, we had the opportunity to ride some portion of our travels in the following states:

GA (duh)
FL
NC
TN

With little extra effort, AL and/or SC could have been included, which brought me to the following suggestion...why not make it a 5 Corners and 5 States ride? That is, show proof (more gas stops would be necessary) of having ridden in a minimum of 5 states while accomplishing the remaining requirements of the 5 corners ride.

So, why don't you pass this idea along to the 5 Corners ride rules, variances, and adendum committee to see what they think?

Dear Captain Zeitz:

On behalf of the Perimeter of Georgia - 5 Corners Ride Committee, thank you for your "5 State" suggestion. It has been placed on the agenda of the next Board meeting.

In a preliminary discussion of you suggestion, certain members of the Committee voiced concern that adding 4 additional states may make the ride "too difficult". ". . . Oh my, you mean I have to ride into other states . . ." The Committee is also worried that making changes may not be well received. The Committee has previously heard of complaints regarding the current ride that the "corners" were not even located at the actual corners of the state! To which one Committee member with shrugged shoulders responded privately, "Geez!"

The Committe has not received any 5 Corners ride applications in 2006 and is now wondering if perhaps the ride is already too-challenging for the majority of riders. Or perhaps it is a ride that's time has come and gone. Or maybe riders have other higher priorities such as family and work. But then, the Committee hasn't done a particularly good job of promoting the ride in 2006 and that is probably the real reason for the lack of rider applications.

I will keep you informed and post the Minutes of the next meeting as soon as they are approved.

Perimeter of Georgia - 5 Corners Ride Committee

Mark Davies, who lives over near Augusta, divulged to me that he did the 5 Corners ride challenge a couple of weeks ago. No crime scene discovery mentioned however.

Maybe.... just MAYBE.... I'm finally gonna get a chance to take the 5 Corners Challenge sometime in the near future. Wanted to do it in '05, didn't even consider it in '06, hopefully in '07 the plan will come together!

And I'm wanting to see if the logisitics will work out for a IBA Georgia SS1K in the process.

The Five Corner ride is not easy. It is, however, doable. As with all things, prior planning prevents poor performance. Once you dig into the planning you will see that it is quite "doable". Once you learn to plan and execute a ride like this you will find yourself asking "well that was do able. I wonder what else I can do." THAT question led me to a 50 hours coast to coast ride on a 26 year old R65 at speeds at or below the speed limit for almost the entire trip. That question put me on top of the Monarch Pass Southern Colorado 11,312' elevation.

As they say on the sci-fi channel - "what if".

Or if all those old black and white photos of riders in leather and oil skin jackets could talk to you, they would whisper "carpe diem".
